NAture’s route farm

Point de bute

Owner: Kent Coates

History

Kent grows a wide variety of great tasting vegetables on their beautiful farm overlooking the New Brunswick / Nova Scotia border. His vegetables are grown sustainably, and responsibly. Since 2007, they have sold most of their vegetables as CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) weekly vegetable boxes. Their CSAmembers purchase a ‘share’ of the harvest bounty and choose 6 and 10 different vegetables from a market style pick up throughout the season.

Description

Kent and Ruth purchased the farm they operate in 2002, it was rented while Kent worked as an engineer in Canada’s Navy until the Fall of 2006. Giving up professional and successful careers in 2006 to farm full time, Kent and Ruth Coates started Nature’s Route Farm in the Spring of 2007. They started with 1.2 acres of vegetables, 75 laying hens and 3 ewes and have grown to 4 acres of vegetables. Since then they have grown a successful farm business that includes growing and selling vegetables and lamb. While they intended to grow vegetables and sell them directly in their community, their business quickly evolved into a full fledged “Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm.

Community Supported Agriculture

Their clients or “CSA members” purchase a produce package for the season. The package is paid for either at the beginning of the season or in installments and the “members” pick up their produce weekly at central pick-up locations. Their business has grown from 28 member families to 330 in 2014 seasons.
